Optimus Prime sexed semen straws have sold for an extraordinary R250,000 per straw, establishing a new benchmark for the value of elite Ankole genetics in South Africa.
The milestone was achieved at the recent Ntaba Nyoni & Friends auction, near Bela-Bela in Limpopo, where demand for exceptional Ankole genetics was exceptionally strong. Ntaba Nyoni was the purchaser of two sexed semen straws from Optimus Prime, paying R250,000 per straw, making them the highest-priced semen lots at the auction. The sale formed part of an overall auction turnover of R22.5 million.
Optimus Prime’s achievement is particularly significant within a broader landmark auction that saw Queen Arusha (NANK23 001), an in-calf Ankole heifer and full sister to Optimus Prime, achieve R6.4 million, setting a record price for a female animal across cattle breeds in South Africa.
Together, these results underline the extraordinary demand and commercial value being placed on carefully selected, high-performance Ankole genetics.
